Meet Signe Schmidt, a dedicated potter and teacher based in Copenhagen. Her work is deeply rooted in the Japandi style — a harmonious blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design traditions. This fusion allows her to create ceramics that embody both cultures’ reverence for simplicity, elegance, and quiet functionality.

Signe is best known for her hand-thrown Matcha bowls, tea cups, and cortado cups, each one a unique composition of form and glaze. Her pieces often feature soft, earthy tones and layered finishes, reflecting nature’s subtle textures. Every glaze is thoughtfully named — often drawing from Japanese — to evoke the feeling and story behind the surface.

Working from her own studio, Signe throws every piece by hand, infusing it with intentionality and presence. She embraces the imperfect beauty of stoneware, allowing the natural clay body to remain part of the visual language.

In addition to her studio practice, Signe teaches throwing techniques at YONOBI and AOF, where she helps students discover the meditative rhythm of working with clay.
