Meet Lena Malchau, the ceramicist and founder behind Malchau Ceramics, a Copenhagen-based ceramics studio where intuition, curiosity, and a love for clay come together. Working from Vesterbro, Lena explores the many faces of clay through both porcelain and stoneware, creating pieces that celebrate the beauty of the material while leaving room for movement, individuality, and surprise.

Lena’s relationship with ceramics began at an early age, when an internship with a potter gave her the opportunity to try throwing on the wheel for the first time. Although her professional path initially took her into the world of sports and movement, ceramics remained a constant alongside it. She spent years exploring wheel throwing and glazes whenever she could, and in 2021 decided to pursue ceramics full-time, turning a long-standing passion into her profession.

For Lena, the process of creating is just as important as the finished piece. She works with intuition, playfulness, and curiosity, allowing the clay to retain a sense of movement rather than striving for perfect uniformity. Small variations, fingerprints, asymmetry, and subtle imperfections are not flaws, but part of what gives each piece its character.

Materiality is central to Lena’s work. Some pieces combine porcelain clay with sand from Tisvildeleje Beach, while areas of raw, unglazed clay are intentionally left visible, creating a tactile contrast between the smooth glazed surfaces and the natural texture of the clay.

Lena believes that ceramics should carry a sense of energy and personality. Whether through an unexpected curve, a shifting glaze, or the gentle movement of a hand-thrown form, her work avoids feeling overly perfect or mechanical. Instead, each piece is given the freedom to become its own.

Today, Lena creates her own ceramics at STUDIO 38 in Copenhagen, while also working part-time at Let’s Clay Ceramics Studio.

Malchau Ceramics is an exploration of what happens when craftsmanship leaves room for intuition. Rooted in Danish materials, traditional techniques, and a playful approach to form, Lena’s ceramics are made to feel personal, tactile, and alive — bringing a little of the raw beauty and energy of clay into everyday life.
