Meet Laura Viby, the ceramic artist behind Viby Ceramics — a practice rooted in presence, immersion, and craftsmanship. Alongside her own studio work, Laura teaches ceramics, driven by a deep passion for sharing the process of working with clay and the powerful effect it can have on the mind. For her, clay demands full attention and presence, allowing no distractions — a quality that makes the process both grounding and calming.
Creating space for this kind of focus and stillness within everyday life, often filled with work, family, and constant digital input, is what makes teaching such a meaningful part of Laura’s work. Time and again, she sees how working with clay opens a mental pause — a place where the hands take over and the mind can rest.
Alongside teaching, Laura develops her own ceramic work through an intuitive, process-driven approach. The repetition of throwing the same cup again and again is meditative, and when new forms emerge, they are often shaped by the hands before being fully imagined. This way of working naturally leads to multiple prototypes and a form language shaped by exploration and patience.
In the Strøg series, Laura works with copper and iron, painted onto pure white porcelain. The forms are first created on the wheel, after which brushstrokes and small figures are added to the surface. These markings act as quiet invitations — encouraging the user to explore each piece and discover its subtle details.
Laura’s wish is that each piece offers the same sense of calm and presence that she experiences during its creation. Every cup becomes an invitation to slow down — a small moment of stillness, held in a cup of coffee.
